Salam Pak Idrus...

Haven't bee here for a long time, trying to catch up.

The pic of the dragon fruit..ohhhh so mengancam! But I still have not acquired the taste of it. Would still love to have it on my fruit platter though - to add some colours. :)

Have a good weekend ya?

uncleawang, thanks for the visit and sharing your knowledge on the dragon fruits.

Yes, I have tasted both varieties, the white as well the red flesh. Agreed with you the white flesh is a bit tasty then the red one. Both are nutritious fruits indeed. One of our export to the world.

So how is Kuching now, I believe it is a enchanting as ever. Have a nice day.

ibu, thanks for the visit and the greeting. There are two varieties, one with a red flesh and the other is just like in the image.

What does the dragon fruit taste like, Pak Idrus? and its texture?

I didn't know that Malaysia exports it now, thought it was an imported fruit. Is it seasonal or available all year round? On rare occasions I'd see one or two on display at World Foods here but have yet to buy as they are dried-up with burnt scars all over and VERY expensive.

Also, it is not often that the apples here are nearly double the size of oranges. Most are smaller as the navel oranges here are huge! The apple on your plate is a Fuji one?

Have a fruity and healthy start to the New Year, Pak Idrus!

Pak Idrus said...

rita, The taste is on the sweet side, not that sweet but just right. Its texture, I am not sure how to describe. It is Like between the soft apple and the papaya, a bit coarse. You scoop with tea spoon to enjoy it. It come in white and bloody red and makes great and color platter.

At present our farmers are planting it for the local market as well as for export. The plant is like the cactus plant but not sturdy and had to be supported with poles. You often see it all the year around but I am not sure whether it comes in season. Maybe our friend Zawi could give some help on this. It is not that expensive, less the RM3.00each.

Although we now produce this fruits, some are still imported to meet the local demand. As for the apple in the photo, yes you are right, it is a Fuji. As for the navel oranges, of recent we get the big one as well. Fruits actually are not that expensive down here.

Have a nice day. [kaki dah semboh ke], take care.

Pak Idrus,
Some details from Wikipedia here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_fruit
I love the taste of the fruits. It is a cactus plant.
I will buy some tomorrow cos my appetite is whetted now hahahaha.

Pak Idrus said...

zawi, thanks for the visit and the link.

Every few years we get yet another new fruits and this time from a cactus plant. My spouse and me love it too. I am sure you can get it at Pasir Mas, Thailand is so near and that country produce all kinds of fruits. Have a nice day.

Pak Idrus,
Ahhh, buah naga. This fruit is exceptionally nice, lots of fibre and very much the same with diet sugar; not that sweet and a healthy fruit. This cactus is highly tolerant with our humid environment. I noticed many farm in Negeri Sembilan growing Dragon Fruits, but not very sure about other places. I'm not really sure how they make it, fresh or not, but the taste of dragon fruit juice is good.

Re Rita Ho's comment.I often see Dragon fruit in the "normal" produce section of one of the large chain supermarkets I shop at in Seattle. I haven't taken note of their origin or price. With the increasingly multiethnic and muliticultural population of the US, plus a slow but widening knowledge about the rest of the world, products that used to be "exotic" are so no longer, and some of the large supermarkets are even getting rid of the special sections to which such formerly "exotic" items were relegated, and instead are placing them among the "normal" items. Now, if only my supermarket would import rambutans.

Pak Idrus,
Oh what a detailed image of the fruits. It must be from your 10 megapixels camera I supposed. Its a fact to be reckoned that fruits contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and natural alkaline acids, which keeps many sickness at bay.

Have a nice day and Happy New Year to you and All At Home.

Salam Pak Idrus,
Its been a while since my last visit... and belated eid mubarak to you! The dragon fruit looks tempting indeed! I've been looking for some Malaysian fruits here in Dhahran at Geant & Carrefour, but alas, none can be found... lots from the Philippines, Thailand, India & Pakistan. Wonder what happened to our Malaysian fruit entrepreneurs? KSA is the largest market in GCC... anyway, take care.

Salam Pak Idrus
I was just told by my doctor that although fruits are good for health, it must be taken in moderation too like when we eat other food.
I particularly like the white flesh dragonfruit although the red flesh ones are much juicer. The red ones stain too.
Pak Idrus, I take this opportunity to wish you and family a Blessed 2008 and happy blogging!

Akmal, thanks for the visit and the additional information of this wonderful fruit.

As usual all fruits could be turn into juice. It all how one do it to make is as tasty as possible. I love this fruits both the white and red one. I read that there is a yellow color one as well. Hope we get to taste that too. Have a nice day.

Pak Idrus said...

Louis, thanks for the visit and that additional information on the availability of this fruit in the US.

Actually we Malaysian knows and have tasted fruits from the west more often then the people of the west on the tropical fruits. It is time that people from the west especially American get to know tropical fruits and enjoy eating it.

There are so much potential on the export of tropical fruits to the west and I believe in due course more tropical fruits would be seen in the market places in the US. And I believe Rambutan would be one of the many tropical fruits that would be seen in the market places in the US.

Globalization should be trade both ways. Have a nice day.

changgeh, thanks for the visit and the additional info on the nutritional contents of the fruits.

For your information the images was take using an 8 mega-pixel camera. If you enlarged it you could see more detail.

Thanks for the New Year greeting. Have a nice day and a Happy New year to you and the family as well.

Pak Idrus,
Couldnt wait until tomorrow to have the fruit. So immediately after posting my earlier comment Fatthiyah aske me to drive her to the Pasir Mas pasar. Lots of the fruits are sold here going for RM6.00 per kg. The fruits weigh about 500 gm each so the cost per fruit is RM3.00. I had the white flesh ones. My wife initially was reluctant to eat it but after coaxing her to taste it she immediately love it.
Thanks again for the post, my wife has aquired the taste of the dragon fruit because of it.

Happy New Year 2008, Pak Idrus.

I am wishing you a great year ahead.

Pak Idrus said...

dhahran sea, thanks for the visit and the Eid Adha greeting. Happy Eid Adha to you and the family as well.

Yes the dragon fruit not only look tempting but taste as good as well. Just click on the image and you would see more detail of the fruits. An 8 mega pixel camera could give all the details that lesser mega pixel could not do. That is the advantage of more pixel in today's digital photography.

I think why Malaysia has yet to export to the KSA is because the output is still limited for local market as well to neighbor Singapore. In due course I am sure you would get this wonderful fruit in the KSA.

Have a nice day.

fauziah, thanks for the visit and sharing your knowledge on the goodness of this fruit. Agreed like everything else, moderation should be the order of the day. It would surely keep us healthy always.

I too love the white one and one had to be careful when taking the red one, as you said it stained, so just be careful when eating the red one.

Thanks for the New Year greeting, best wishes to you as well. BTW, I heard that you got a promotion, Congratulation. Great news to greet the new year 2008.

Have a nice day and take care.

Pak Idrus ... I always enlarge your pictures, so yes I drooled over the juicy fruit. I am going to buy one to try when I next find it on sale here. It reminds me of the seedy custard apple fruit - a favorite of mine.

Thank you to you, Zawi and all the others for the additional knowledge and tips on the beautiful fruit. :)

Louis ... I love rambutans too and have been eating them out of cans. A far cry from the fresh ones but partly satisfying to the occasional craving.
