Of Facebook....

It has been raining folks and the weather has been cool and pleasant. I sat here at the Kopitiam table at the patio and writing this. I thought that for today I would write about the social network in cyberspace, the Facebook. Malaysians are catching up on this new phenomenon in cyberspace and today I believe there are millions of Malaysian on Facebook. I was a bit reluctant to go join in at first but eventually join the gang about a year ago. When I join FB I actually did not know of how it works. I just add anyone who wanted to be my 'friend' and eventually found that it was not a wise thing to do. As I was new into it I have not found the 'hide' and the 'delete' button as yet and because it soon became a nuisance I decided to just closed my FB Account. Actually it takes awhile to learn of how to get out of FB but eventually after many tries I got out of it.

For a while I was not in this social network but then I found at the last year Hari Raya gathering at our home that many of my relatives are in it and ask me to post all those images that I had taken during the Raya. Eventually after much thought I decided to go in again and registered myself again as one of the FB person. So here I am in Facebook for more than one and half years already and still learning the best way of using this media in cyberspace for my advantage. I have been blogging since 2003 and am well verse of the pro and con of the culture of cyberspace as far as posting articles or comments and edit my posting, so that when I posted it for public reading it would be a good material to read. And later on enjoy the exchange of comments as its come. Unlike Blogging where we at time discuss in the comment column on the subject of the posting, in Facebook there are really no article but just a brief of one's thought, which would generate discussion. I thought that it is a good place to discuss issues and refreshes our memories of things but then it also has it pitfalls.

Eventually I learned that if I were to get advantage of using Facebook I must be smart in the way I select 'friend' and posted my thoughts as well as comments. It takes awhile before I got the hang of it. Soon I began to delete all those 'friend' that I felt of no use to me and that includes those insincere one. I consider those Facebook friends who refused to put his or her true Personal Profile image and true name or user-name, as person not sincere. Thus I consider them as insincere who want to be in the community but did not want to share personal information like all friends should be. I hope those folks at Facebook see to it that People who registered on Facebook put on their true identity especially their Personal Profile image and Name or User-Name on their Facebook wall. Surely they could develop software that would reject all the images that are not true or computer generated images. Only those who put their true Personal Profile image and true name or user-name be allowed to sign on to Facebook. Those who refused to do so should be rejected outright. As for me I now no longer allows those Cartoon or Avatar folks to be my friends and I have also taken a further action by not posting comments on those wall where there are Cartoon or Avatar participating in the comments columns. I felt it is an insult to my intelligent to associate myself with those insincere people who are so afraid to show their true identity and at the same time want to be part of the community in Facebook.

So folks, Facebook should be treated like a real community in the real world in that it is a place where we could share out thoughts with each other in order to make the community a better place to live and enjoy life. Like the real world it has it set of problems but the culture of a good community remains the same. In the real world we have etiquette whereas in cyberspace we have netiquette and if folks adhered to the rules then things would turn out alright. So be always guarded in whatever one does. So far I am doing alright now but continue to be vigilant on the misuses of the wall of my Facebook. I do not allow people to use SMS language on my wall and anyone using it would be deleted after a warning. I am sticking to a few friends who are sincere rather than having a thousand whom I hardly know or insincere one.

BTW folks there are some 5 millions Facebook user in Malaysia now.... Read this...

Have a nice day

Well said Pak Idrus.

I am new to Blogging, hardly a year, and has plenty to learn, being a reluctant Blogger. As for FB I have been around for 3 months to keep PokKu and friends connected. Yes I have plenty to learn, and learning fast.

This post of yours has enlighten me on many aspects. Thank you.

Salam Pak Idrus.

Thank you for stopping by my blog. I was very active years back but have been slacking updating it since my late father became ill with cancer and finally succumbed to it early this year.

You know... it was my initial reaction to FB too when I first joined it.

Not knowing much on how to enable or disable its many features to keep my privacy and especially choose the right "friend" to include in my network.

I was and still am not comfortable with people who have bogus identity. I am especially not interested with people who put on other person's pictures are their own.

I also do not except people with links to adult or undesired site as I do not wish to associate myself with such kind.

Of course the accepted ones can always change their profile images and have new links to those undesired websites from time to time, I scan these friends whenever I can to remove them from my list of friends.

I do not judge them for their choices but I wish to keep mine "clean" as a choice because I have my son and wife, my in-laws, nieces and nephews, as well as working colleagues as friends in my group.

I have been keeping safe and "clean" friends on my blog for many years since I started being online and intend to keep it that way still.

Some regulation is always good to keep the abuse at bay but people must realize that whenever they put themselves online, they have to be wary of the ill-intent people out there. They cannot afford to be ignorant when they want to use this mass-media. Whatever we do, we have the choice, so we have to choose wisely.

To me, blogging are for the thinking community while FB is for the young who wishes to have short and fast, on-the-move "chat" as their social networking medium.

I love you garden. I wish I have that at my home. But alas, living in a high-rise building, I only have my corridor garden that is next best with everything considered.

I hope to visit you again and read the happenings from your patio and relax myself looking out at your garden and its many inhabitant and visitors.

Have a great weekend!

Salam Pak Idrus,

Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving your comment.

I wrote a lengthily note talking about my blog and how infrequent it has become with updates and my thoughts about FB but it returned as "URI too long" error message upon submission. All is lost. It was that long!

Anyway, I love to your garden view from your patio. One can get really relaxed in such an environment. What a blessing.

Hope to visit you soon. For now I have to rush to my niece's engagement event when Wifey and I have don-up her bedroom, only left to set-up the dais at the hall downstairs for guests photo-taking later this afternoon.

Have a great weekend!

tokcik, thanks for the visit and the good words on this posting.

Well I thoughts that I would give my take on FB as a rookie and hope that like me they too would learn a thing or two of how best we could use cyberspace to our advantage. I have been enjoying myself in blogging and through it got to know many strangers, a few from faraway land and I did managed to meet them in person when I travel oversea; like meeting Louis and Rita Ho in Seattle two years ago. The same is happening through FB like meeting you in cyberspace and I like it. Maybe we could meet for a TT one of these days.

At this age we have plenty of times I think it is good that we share our thoughts with others with a hope that it would contributes into improving the quality of life of others as well.

Have a nice day.

Muhd Imran, thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts on the subject of this posting. Not to worry both your comments are here. I am indeed happy that you have taken so much of your time to narrate on the issue we are discussing now, Blogging and the FB.

I am from the cave generation when there was nothing, no electricity, no running water, no radio and no nothing; now quantum leaped into this new era of information. As such I am learning to use the new media as I move on and I am enjoying it. Anyways I could always fall back to my grand kids when I got lost in this new world of cyberspace. The are really good in computer and I believe this generation of my grand kids live, eat and dream in cyberspace too. They are indeed a lucky generation.

As a retired wage earner I live in a Terres house which I bought more than thirty years ago, considered to be very Ulu of KL. Now it is just five minutes away from KLCC which is our lepak place now. If your ever in KL let me know and I would be glad to meet you there for lunch or whatever.

As for that garden I tried to make the best of the available space I have, thus that little garden in front of my patio. Not too big but just nice and easily managed.

As for blogging I try to do two posting a week and if ever I am out of ideas I would just post some images that I took. I am into photography too so I am now enjoying life in the golden years through blogging, FB and Photography.

BTW one of my kids is working with ISEAS in Singapore.

Have a nice day and take care.

Hi Pak Idrus
I opened my FB account a couple of months ago. Now, I'm still learning how I could benefit from being a member. Have not been able to put in anything into my FB yet; so it's more or less 'kosong'! Salam bahagia.

Temuk, thanks for the visit. I am glad that you too are on Facebook. It is a community social network where we could share our thought with others. In FB we just write a brief unlike in Blogging where we would narrate at length. In a way it has a different culture from Blog.

I hope to seen you on Facebook soon. BTW what is your registered name on Facebook. I need it to add you as friend and start the ball rolling.

Have a nice day.

Salam Pak Idrus,
I would never consider quitting facebook as it is a useful networking tool, especially for someone like me who coordinates many events for NGOs and need to recruit volunteers and participants all the time. However, I do make an effort to be careful about the people I accept and retain as Friends. If neither party can add value to the friendship, then they are deleted from my friends' list. This includes people who give too much unsolicited advice or are just in social networking sites to blow their own trumpet.

~Covert_Operations'78~, Ee Lynn thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts on the subject of this posting. Agreed Facebook is a great media to exchange thoughts. Use it wisely and we all would benefit from it.

Have a nice day and take care.

Dear Pak Idrus,

I just read your posting about FB. Hahaha, very nicely said. I agree 100%.

I have been on facebook since 2006 starting when I worked with Virtualmalaysia.com, obviously an IT company. So people there are all IT savvy more than the average. We were checking on every possible social sites to see how they work and fare in the community. Can't imagine back then, that it could be so huge today.

True to what you said, some people simply added other people for whatsoever reasons I myself don't understand. That's why they end up being rejected or deleted from my friend's list. I will not add anyone whom I do not know. That's why my friends list is still not many compared to others (:

Good write up, Pak Idrus. I like it (:
