Folks, Enjoy these images. The Custard Apple is from our own tree at that back of the house, whereas the Banana and the Water Apple are from the fruits vendor. I am not sure why the English names of these fruits are such but I believe that when the European first saw these fruits, they had to give a name for it. So the simplest way is to use Apple as a reference. Thus Our Jambu Air is Water Apple and our Buah Nona is Custard Apple. But they got a name for our Pisang in Banana. Well, these are nutritious fruits to take and it taste great as well. Have a nice day.
Good afternoon, Idrus
ReplyDeleteThat red water apple looks just like what we knew as a cashew in Trinidad.
Haven't eaten a custard apple in years. Your photo whetted my appetite.
Too bad certain things were sometimes named by people who gave no dignity to the native names for them. That's the reason, for example, why the native peoples of the Americas and the Caribbean are called "Indians", a thoroughly mistaken term imposed by a sailor who didn't have any idea where he was.
Salam Pak Idrus,
ReplyDeleteOur tropical food are various and delicious. What more if it is home grown like your Buah Nona. My rambutan is bearing fruits this year and looks like its going to be plenty of rambutans. Usually the one tree that we have will produced enough fruits for neighbors and close relatives.
Begitulah manisnya berbudi dengan tanah.
Dear PI,
ReplyDeleteThe custard apple looks tempting. Have not tasted one before, maybe I should give it a check at the local wet market.
Local fruits are still my favourite. Pisang emas, jambu batu, mata kuching and wild pineapples. My liking for wild pineapples was acquired since my childhood days in the estates.
Too bad, most varieties of fruits that available in mmarket are too sweet to my liking. They are 'honey' and 'super' clones for most types of fruits.
Thank you, nice day to you too.
Hello Pak Idrus, how you doin'? Love your pics of the buah nona. I remember eating them and my friends and I will see who can spit the seeds the furthest.
ReplyDeleteOld days I used to have Malay classmates staying at Kampong Baru, and a few had these buah nona trees in their kebun, their leaves selalu ada those fighting spiders. Sure had fun chari these spiders bring to school in match boxes to fight.
I read recently Kampong baru going to make way for new housing or a mall? Alamak, the government should simpan like heritage site.
I sure have many fond memories of Kampong Baru, Princess road and Gurney road.
And reading your burning rubbish to keep the skeeters away, I few times stayed at a friend's house in a kampong, and petang help the pakcik collect coconut husks to burn, the asap will get rid of the mosquitos. Oh ya, I became an expert at dropping a pail tied to a rope into a well for bathing. But bathing from a kampong well at 7am is no joke! Ha ha.
Pak Idrus, I looked at your previous posting, re 'Janda Baik'....and it rings a bell in my head, but being here 22 years, my otak da la kering sikit...I have been there before, but having been to all 9 corners of Malaysia, ha ha, I just cannot place it mana tempat ni.
Is is it after Genting Highlands?
Anyway, some of the best days of my life was staying with a friend in their kampong house, sleeping on a mat tikar, but I took a pass at pakai a sarong, haha.
You stay easy Pak Idrus and keep well, Lee.
ps, love your beautiful music...abit like kronchong kan?
Pak Idrus, how do u eat buah nona? truth is, iv never seen the fruit before. hehe.
ReplyDeleteHi Pak Idrus,
ReplyDeleteIt's been years since I saw a Custard Apple. Yours looks very healthy and sweet.
That red fruit looks very much like what we knew as a cashew.
Assalamualaikum Pak Idrus,
ReplyDeleteSekarang ni susah nak jumpa buah Nona apa lagi kat gerai buah-buahan. Saya tak pernah makan buah nona sebab bau dia...agaknya apakah khasiat buah nona ni?
I lal li qa..
Folks, Sorry for the delay in replying to your comments. I would get it done soon. Have a nice day and take care.
ReplyDeletelouis, thanks for the visit.
ReplyDeleteThe water apple is of the same shape and size like the Cashew but with the Cashew the seed is outside. We do have Cashew here and the young leaves are use as the traditional salad.
As for that name, like you said it is the naivety of those foreign sailors at that time of our history. Custard apple as yet to be a commercial fruit, thus you do not get much on the market. Anyways I love this fruits.
Have a nice day.
jaflam, thanks for the visit and sharing your thought on this subject. True we have great and nutritious fruits. It should be commercialized and exported.
ReplyDeleteYalah berbudi selaluny membawa faedah. Have a nice day.
all-in-one, thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts on the subject of this posting.
ReplyDeleteCustard Apple to me is special and it is not always in the market. It taste great but had to be taken slowly because it has many pits or stone. I enjoy it using the teaspoon.
Like you I love tropical fruits and banana is my favorite. Have a nice day.
u.lee, thanks for the visit and sharing your experiences and thoughts on your growing up period in Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteAs for Janda Baik, yes it is near the Genting Highland and it is still wild like before. A great place for a rural retreat.
Glad that you love the keroncong. Have a nice day. Take care.
salt & turmeric, thanks for the visit.
ReplyDeleteBuah Nona is a great fruit to enjoy slowly. It has many pits and one had to spit it out or use your finger to take the pit. You have to use a teaspoon to scoop it out and enjoy it. It not that sweet but the texture is just like custard. Look around and try it.
It is easy to grow and could be grown in pots. When you are back in KL, let me know I would introduce it to you.
Have a nice day.
louis, thanks for the return visit.
ReplyDeleteEven in Malaysia we do not get it often, that is one reason I grow it, so from time to time I would get a good harvest.
The cashew nut fruit is almost similar but the nut of the cashew is outside the fruit. Here we would use the fruit part as a vegetable but not always. Most of the fruits part are thrown away and only the nut is taken to became that roasted cashew nut.
Have a nice day.
auntieyan, thanks for the visit and sharing your thoughts on this subject.
ReplyDeleteYes it is sometimes difficult to get the Custard Apple and that is one reason why I grow the three. As for the fruit I think it smell good, that is why I enjoyed it.
Have a nice day.
I love custard apple and water apple! In Jamaica, my parents had a water apple tree in the back yard.
ReplyDeletegeorgia, thanks for the visit and sharing your experiences on this subject. Hope that when you are in KL you get to taste the custard apple from our our trees. As for water apple, it is a common sight in those days in the village.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day.
